About August Burns Red

August Burns Red is an American metalcore band from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The band was first formed in 2003 when the members were attending high school. The band’s original practice sessions began in drummer, Matt Greiner’s old egg house and basement on the Greiner family’s farmland. The band played several local shows in Lancaster and eventually recorded their first EP, Looks Fragile After All with CI Records in 2004.

One of the band’s original members, vocalist Jon Hershey, quit the band during the same year, which led to Josh McManness taking over as lead singer. Hershey eventually left the band after their first tour, which led to Jake Luhrs taking over. Jordan Tuscan also left the band around this time and he was replaced by Dustin Davidson. The band’s current lineup consists of lead guitarist John Benjamin “JB” Brubaker, rhythm guitarist Brent Rambler, drummer Matt Greiner, lead vocalist Jake Luhrs and bassist Dustin Davidson.

Musical style and influences

Musically, August Burns Red is known as a metalcore band, though they have also shared elements of progressive metal. Some fans identify the band as a melodic metalcore band as their songs frequently feature melodic guitar riffs, technical time signatures, and a variety of influences including Meshuggah, Symphony in Peril, Pelican, Slayer and The Dillinger Escape Plan. Unlike other melodic metalcore bands though, Jake Luhrs does not mix clean vocals with his screams.

It’s interesting to note that while the band does’nt mind being classified as metalcore, Brubaker has stated a distaste for many of the genre’s bands. He stated in an interview with Revolver magazine that “I feel like anyone who can pick up and play a guitar and learn to play a metalcore riff and any drummer who can learn to play a thrash beat over a breakdown is doing it. It’s almost become very formulaic, and metal to me was never a formulaic genre.” Also, while the band doesn’t consider itself a Christian band. The members do let their faith come through in their lyrics.
